Alexander Wang collaborates with Dr. Dre
It's been a double whammy of a launch week for Alexander Wang. In between juggling his commitments as Balenciaga's creative director alongside his own eponymous label, he's also found time to revamp his e-commerce store and design a pair of limited edition cans for Dr. Dre's Beats line of headphones and musical accoutrements.
The collection, reports WWD , which drops on December 16, features a pair of headphones, a speaker and a pair of earbuds. The cans and speaker come in at about £275 and £183 a pop which is fine and dandy but £80 earbuds? It's seriously hard to get adequate mileage out of the designer logo on those!
"For this collaboration with Beats by Dr. Dre," explained the designer, "it felt right and a natural choice for me to give the Beats Studio headphones, Beats Pill and Urbeats earbuds a clean, minimal look with a luxe sensibility." Translate that as a matte black finish, pale gold accents and cases made of embossed stingray.
As for the improved e-commerce offering, he termed that as "minimal" as well, along with "engaging, functional and easy to navigate," pointing out that he started selling online before he had any bricks and mortar stores. Sales from alexanderwang.comcurrently make up 20 percent of direct-to-consumer business but are expected to become the 'single biggest contributor to the direct business by 2015' reports WWD .
The best thing about the new interface, though, is the carousel of handbags (the strongest selling category on the site as it goes) - given an x-ray machine make-over by the digital design wizards - displaying their contents for all to see: shoes, i-phone case, gym kit, yoga mat, make-up bag, sweaters… and of course a pair of Beats headphones.
